Episode 23 “Warrior Returns to the Wind” Preview Images and Synopsis

No extra pictures from the “Next Episode” preview today. That was a lot more Lisa Lisa and Cars focused. This deals more with the episode title since it has Wham and all.

Joseph and Wham’s showdown approaches it’s conclusion with neither warrior giving an inch. Backed into a corner by Joseph’s tactics leading to a devastating blow, Wham gears up for his final, sure kill mode. As the curtain draws, Lisa Lisa and Cars must also prepare for their duel to determine the fate of the Red Stone of Aja. They’ll fight in the Ancient Mountain Temple on Piz Bernina. The fate of the stone, and therefore the fate of humanity, rests on one final battle.

Unlike last time, everyone in this crew has been on JoJo’s before. Kazuyuki Fudeyasu’s on screenplay, Taizo Yoshida’s on storyboard, and Shin Hyung Woo and Tomoaki Kado on Animation Direction all with Director Jiro Fujimoto returning to the director’s chair from waaaay back in Episode 8. It’s going to be his first time in Battle Tendency so let’s see what he can do with the craziness.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure The Abridged Series Part 1: Phantom Blood Coming Soon!

OH MAH GAWD

It’s happening. It’s happening soon. I don’t know when soon is, but it’s happening at that time which is soon holy crap. We all knew it would be happening deep down, but the confirmation is like Super Christmas where Dio is Santa and he brought you a stand for your birthday. If that didn’t make any sense, it’s only because I’m super hyped, and you should be too.

Edit:

He also made a quick promo with the intro. It’s more hype gathering, so go give them hype to gather.

Quick update from everyone’s favorite internet scientist/voice actor, Phantom Blood Abridged has it’s official opening sequence.

Made by the internet man who makes the D. Gray-Man Abridged series. Looks pretty good. Wonder if we’ll get an ending clip with “Roundabout” since I don’t know if abridged series even do ending sequences having only watched three ever.

Well, spread the news. The more little bits released, the closer we are to the show starting.

The JoJo Anime site has put up their official page for OST 2 [Musik]. Like with the Phantom Blood OST Future, this has a few quick snippets for previews. The current tracks you can preview are “oh please..” (Next Episode Preview Music) “Il mare eterno nella mia anima” and “Overdrive” (what I’ve been calling the “Comin’ Through Now” song.) It comes with a friendly reminder that the CD drops on March 29th, but also that it will come as a bonus with the Vol. 4 Blu-rays released on April 26th. Make sure and get it whichever way is best for you.

Before we start, New Joseph Face:

Lookin’ good as always

All right, now that that’s out of the way, it’s time for the reunion episode. Everyone is here!

Stroheim is back with a reinforced stomach

And he brought Speedwagon along for the ride.

Cars is so excited he let his hair down and kicked the shine into high gear

It may help that he found that free leg lying around

Wham’s a little upset that he clawed his eyes out before getting to see the group again

And Lisa Lisa’s really looking down on herself for not being able to tell him

All in all, though, it’s still fun. A bunch of old comrades and enemies coming together for one last gathering before the gods of old rise up to destroy humanity with their perfect bodies. Good times. Good times.

(You can see the rest at Yaraon, but spoiler warnings)

“Some Poses are Physically Impossible” Making of the JoJo’s Opening Sequences

I’m glad they released this as a news article. It seems like the sort of thing that would be a Blu-ray extra, probably towards the last disc.

CGWorld has released an indepth look into the making of the Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency opening sequences. It’s a whole special about how it was made to the creative process behind certain chosen scenes. You even get to see Caeser’s motion points under his model.

There’s a lot of technical discussion, too. Plenty of information about what kinds of software were used to get the right effects. After Effects, Photoshop, certain video editors and all that. We get to get down to the grit of drawing a 2D scene and the layering of different parts of the drawing.

And that’s only a few of the steps

It’s cool to see where they had to get tricky with the models and lighting. There’s a whole section about the police shooting Dio scene and the difficulties of getting things like the lighting to work and playing with the models so they’d all function together. There’s even some things I would never guess. The arms that reach out for the Red Stone of Aja in the Part 2 sequence? Photoshopped picture of a real arm.

Still, the thing that caught my attention the most was Caeser’s pose when Joseph and he confront the Pillar Men on top of their rock.

Innocuous as this pose is for JoJo’s of all things, the article notes that this arm position is a little impossible for the human body. You can’t take it out, though, and swap it out for some pedestrian pose where his arms are just sort of around. Posing is part of “JoJo’s Charm” as they put it. So what do you do?

Break anatomy a little. It’s ok; this probably falls under the same position as Zoom Punch and Caeser’s able to do that because of the ripple. That or he’s a secret Pillar Man who already became an ultimate lifeform and is trying to stop the others because only one person can stand at the peak.

It’s a cool article. There are even more pictures, insights into the creative process, and weird models of characters they could recycle and probably make into an indie XBLA game.

I love the stretching boxes around the sound effects

Make sure and check out the full article here.

Next Time: A JOJO Special Announcement

From the official anime twitter, it says that there will be a “special announcement” during next week’s episode 25. What’s the special announcement? I have no idea. We’re all hoping, what with the season coming to a close, that it’ll be the Stardust Crusaders anime announcement. Keep your eyes peeled and your fingers crossed. This should be a big one.

And Cars, who fell to Earth as a nearly invincible superman, has become a truly invincible living god to whom certain human or even pillar men things may now be useless. Joseph employs the Commandeered Nazi Airplane variant on Joestar Ultimate Secret Technique to buy enough time to figure out how to beat the unbeatable. Cars is in hot pursuit. What is Joseph going to do?!

I think the animation is important in this episode. One Director and Storyboarder, Kenichi Suzuki, and one screenwriter, tokusatsu lady Yasuko Kobayashi. The normal amounts for those jobs, but not one, not two, but a whopping five animation directors! Tatsuya Shirashi, Manabu Akita, Shinichi Machida, Kyoko Kotani, and Ryo Kobayashi. Every single one is a previous staff on the show working with animation direction. I guess when it’s Piranha o’Clock, you have to bring in the cavalry.

And it happened a third time. I don’t remember why this started anymore, but whatever. It works decently with the instrumental parts of “Roundabout,” especially the bass solo and and organ parts. Regardless of how you feel about the music mix, though, it’s worth it because of this.

It unlocks the true b-ball potential hidden away in every human brain

So who do you think will be Barkleyfied when the Stardust Crusaders mashup comes around?

There’s my boy. Or can you say that Cars is a boy at this point. I’m still disappointed that the SEX USELESS doesn’t shoot out of his crotch as a sound effect, but seeing it down there in all caps as part of this scene pulled directly from the manga makes me pretty happy.

I’m not doing tons of preview images here because we’re busy with the con, but you can always check out all of them at Yaraon.

Ahem, if I may. FUCKING PIRANHAS! FUCKING PIRANHAS! FUCKING PIRANHAS!

For the honor of all JoJo and also GeJo!

So yeah. That’s all right? Yeah, I’m wondering about the special announcement too. I haven’t seen anything on Yaraon, forums, JoJo Twitter, or the anime official site other than that the Vol. 4 Blu-rays are now up on Amazon and a wild comment on Yaraon mentioning wondering about Part 3. We may have to wait until the subs come out because it’s inline or something that wouldn’t show up in screenshots. Don’t worry. It’ll come.

Hey everyone. We’re back from MTAC. There were some great panels and a few JoJo cosplayers. Need a little time to cool down and start processing everything, but here’s a little thing to tide everyone over.

Please go make this the internet phenomenon it deserves to be. I know it is a little bit, but I haven’t seen the phrase “FUCKING PIRANHAS” on a t-shirt at a convention. I’ll consider it complete at that point.

Edit:

Also this. If someone manages to work this into a cosplay, I will give you a prize.

“Italians Put Squid Ink on Pasta?!” JoJo’s at ACE

We weren’t the only ones at a convention this weekend. Warner Bros. and JoJo team had a booth at this year’s Anime Content’s Expo, or ACE. It’s a open anime trade fair, and because it’s about anime companies and studios showing what they’ve got, they also have some influence over the menu.

This spaghetti al nero, according to the twitter, was something you could buy at the ACE food court for the small price of ¥800. You just need to make sure and wipe your mouth after eating it. And no starting magic food fights.

Edit:

Oh, also cosplay. Yes, this group of magnificent people also managed to show up in front of a certain statue of Santana. One day, we’ll get a group like this in the States, and they’ll be so mad when I never stop taking pictures of them.

It’s been a long road. Across the Earth, across generations, and it all climaxes here on a little volcanic island off the west coast of Sicily. Joseph’s suicide combo attack with Stroheim successfully airplane body slams Cars into the smoldering volcanic crater, but the Ultimate Lifeform is not so easily killed. He comes out of the lava with not so much as a scratch and goes back on the offensive. With half a cyborg, a red rock, and no anti-god ripple overdrives, what will Joseph do to overcome the perfect being?

Trimming down the crew as we head for the end. Storyboard and direction are being handled by Toshiyuki Kato, Screenplay once again done by Yasuko Kobayashi, and animation direction taken care of by series chief animation director Takako Shimizu. She’s also the one who handled general character design and some key animation on the ending sequence. It nice to see her sending off JoJo’s with a little personal touch.

Can you sense it in the air? That feeling of joy that we’re going to see the final climax, but the feeling of dread that this Friday will be the last JoJo’s until at least fall season and may be the last JoJo’s episode ever? I’ve seen a few people say how they both can wait for it and hope it never comes. I sympathize.

It looks so real. I want it to be real. I want to believe. But it’s April 1st. There’s something kinda weird about how Jotaro looks in the second picture, too, and it’s April 1st. Don’t mess with me, davidproduction, or whoever. I couldn’t find where these came from, they were posted in a JoJo’s thread, but they’re from some Tumblr.

Hope against hope guys. It’s April 1st here, but it’s not April 1st in Japan anymore. Come on, davidproduction/Warner Bros/whoever. We all want it.

Edit: Boo, it’s not real. Oh well. I got a new phone lock screen out of a prank, so it’s bittersweet.

JoJo’s Blu-Ray Vol. 4 Box and Disc Art and Leicht Verwendbar Disc Art

The official anime site, at time of writing, still has the image for the Vol. 4 blu-rays listed as the “NOW PRINTING” gray block. It’s ok, though. The guys over at SRWZ have us covered.

Well, mostly. I’m not sure what it is that will be in that “Event Now Printing” gray paper flap, but the discs and box art are all there. Seeing Joseph with the tommy gun is always satisfying, and it’s nice to see Speedwagon. Most interestingly, though, is the second disc there which should be the CD for Battle Tendency OST Leicht Verwendbar. The art looks like Cars, ACDC, and Wham posing with the Red Stone of Aja, which makes sense considering that “Awaken” seems to be the most sought after track on that disc.

A closer look at all the cover art. Like always, I believe the full color is blu-ray and the halftone style is standard DVD. I like the halftone for Joseph a lot because it’s easier to see the tommy gun. It also helps that halftones make a lot of sense as a style choice because of the whole 1930s New York thing. I could totally see that picture of Joseph under a headline of “Man Guns Down Streetside Bar in Tragic Vampire Attack.”

It’s finally time. Let’s send the series that’s brought us so much joy off with a bang.

Episode 26 is an episode of moments.

A moment of despair

A moment of true JoJo power

A moment in space

A moment of love

A moment to say goodbye to old friends

And a moment of hope for the future

You can see the rest of the pictures at Yaraon. Hope to see everyone again for our trip to Egypt!

Everything that is JoJo’s culminates in this product! Well, not really, but of all the things that can become products. And you use it exactly how you expect it to.

Oh yes. No more stress rolling balls or squeezy toys. Just just one fist and one frog. You even get a bonus of Yoku Shioya, voice actor for Will, yelling his frog punching quote, “Power! This is the power of ripple energy!”

It’s going to be released in July for ¥2,415 ($24.95.) You’ll have to pay a decent shipping price, but can you really afford to pass up a product like this?

JoJo raDIO Episode 11 Transcript… Sorta

$

JoJo fans are often the best. You remember JoJo raDIO I take it? When it was first announced, I was hoping that someone would pick it up for translation but knew that wouldn’t be that likely since it would be a massive block of dialogue being a radio show. Well, maybe I was being a bit pessimistic. Drakonia Tumblr has, for a bit now, been releasing synopses of the videos. Here’s the most recent one for Episode 11 where they had Takehito Koyasu on. Quoted directly:

JOJOraDIO vol.11!

This week’s guest is Koyasu Takehito, the voice of Dio Brando himself!

Ueda-san starts off with a listener’s message from a 30 year old male who became a JoJo fan back when Part 4 was still being published, and his wife got hooked by the new anime.

Then Ueda-san invites Koyasu-san (mentioning how he himself is nervous and excited). Koyasu-san says that many of his fans mentioned JOJOraDIO, how interesting it was and how they wanted him to be one of the guests. Then they have some laughs about how this radio always gets funny when you try to talk seriously. Koyasu-san says that he’s known JoJo for a long time, he started reading it even before becoming a seiyuu, but wasn’t much of a fan. He attended auditions for the new anime and he decided for himself that if he gets a role, it has to be Dio. He also mentions how as a child he thought that JoJo manga was more of a horror kind (the stone mask scared him quite a bit), but when he reread it as a grown-up he understood that it’s absolutely different. He also wondered what Araki-sensei (as an adult) thought while creating the manga and whether he wanted children to read it. Then Koyasu-san talks about reading works from the point of view of a character he’s going to voice (Dio in this case) and how it brings new colours to the setting. He says that for JoJo he only scims through the anime scripts without reading them thoroughly, because after reading the manga it’s enough for him. He just takes notes of short/long phrases, and then goes all out at the recording because the atmosphere in the studio demands just that – raw hotblooded action.

Koyasu-san says that working on JoJo anime was a pleasant and fun experience for him, mostly thanks to Okitsu Kazuyuki and his acting as the main protagonist. Initially Koyasu-san intended to give Dio the leading role but ended up having to keep up with Okitsu’s Jonathan, and it was really refreshing for him. He even thanked Okitsu-san for that after the recording.

Then Koyasu-san talks about the cast, how all the cast and staff members were “looking in the same direction” and aiming for the same goal (and this is what made working on JoJo anime different from his previous works where everyone seemed to work separately), and how tiring it was despite being interesting and pleasant. Then they discuss the recording process, differences in interpretation of character roles, Iwanami-san’s requests concerning certain lines and such. Koyasu-san also mentions how at first he thought that Dio was more cool and composed, but it turned out he was about as hotblooded as Jonathan (and even his inner monologues had to be loud and obnoxious).

Episode 3 gets brought up again (no surprise here, really), Koyasu-san says that it felt as if studio itself was on fire during the recording, he even had kind of a hallucination that they were really surrounded by flames, and felt like he himself was not Koyasu Takehito voicing Dio, but he WAS Dio and he WAS fighting there (a thing he’d never before experienced during 26 years of his career). Probably, the pacing and tempo of the anime itself helped build up the tension and gave them some kind of adrenalin rush, he says. It was also the most fun episode for him to work on, other ones didn’t bring that much joy and satisfaction, and Dio from episode 4 onwards was like a new and different character for him, one closer to Stardust Crusaders DIO (he even pronounced it as an acronym – dee-ai-oh).

Then they discuss Dio, how he doesn’t learn from his mistakes and remains too arrogant for his own good even through all of the Part 3, and how Jonathan always stands in Dio’s way and wastes his life interfering with his evil plans of world domination XD Also Koyasu-san said to Okitsu-san “You became so great all thanks to Dio. Be grateful to him! Be grateful that he made your life so fun and florid! And die feeling that gratitude!” (テラ子安www). Well, he does understand feelings of villains, after having voiced so many of them. “Do those heroes of justice have nothing else to do but mess with my villanous schemes? They really should get a life!”

Also, usually Ueda-san finishes the talk with “Next time <guest name> will speak about even deeper JoJo love”, but this time he changed it to “Dio love”. Nice touch.

Next week it’s still Koyasu Takehito.

Wow, this one turned out MUCH more detailed than usual O_o Can’t be helped, though, ‘cause I adore Koyasu and I absolutely loved him as Dio.

Quite a brick of text, isn’t it? Not that that’s a bad thing by any stretch. If you’ve been interested in JoJo raDIO but haven’t been able to pick it up, go give Drakonia Tumblr due attention for putting these out and give the synopses a read through.
